Episode 005: Spotlight
This episode, Mike and Geoff discuss Spotlight, the kind of drama that all those big-franchise actors do big franchises to be able to make.
In discussing the film’s depiction of the investigative reporting team that finally shone a… well, spotlight on the Catholic Church’s decades-long practice of enabling and covering up for the rape of children, the guys discuss sealed documents, the relationship between attorneys and sensitive clients, representing unsavory clients, and confidential settlement agreements.
Mentioned specifically in this episode are:
- Globe Newspaper Co. v. Clerk of Suffolk County Superior Court, in which the court unsealed documents from a number of cases at the Boston Globe’s request;
- The New York Child Victims Act, which has enabled many of those in that state who suffered sexual abuse as children to finally get their day in court; and
- Section 85K, the Massachusetts law that limits damages recoverable from charitable organizations to $20,000.
